Int 2 History Pupils - snow closure work advice.

More snow and closures but please don't fall further behind. These are not holidays; they are days of learning and exam preparation missed, so don't waste them.

You need to start thinking about the Extended Response, so here is the help sheet to help you get started:

Just in case this cold spell and snow showers continue, here is some work to keep you up to date.

You could be working through the Free at Last Questions, so work through as many as you can.

If you can find past paper questions to do, then do as many as you can.

Good Morning! (and if some of you missed the morning #fail)

You should be working through and completing the questions on the collapse of the Weimar Republic and the rise of the Nazis. (These questions on Chapter 10 can be found in a recent post). To help you understand proportional representation download this:

Higher History - Chapter 10 Questions

Hello everyone. Hope you've finished Chapter 9 questions and making a start on the essay which will be done on Monday, weather permitting. I think you should work on the essay as much as you can, helping each other where possible.

However, you will need to get on with the Chapter 10 questions on Friday. In case the school is still closed or you can't get in here is the Chapter 10 questions for you to get with. Please pass on the message that ALL pupils should be visiting the website to keep up to date with work.

Higher History Unification Essay concerns

Hello again,

Glad to see so many of you using the site today. I got a e-mail tonight asking about the essay on Monday. The question was -"just wondering about the essay we're supposed to be doing on monday, would you just suggest using the things you posted on the website, the marking scheme and our notes and things to get the essay planned? i'm just not feeling 100% confident with this section yet".

Here's my answer which I thought might be of use to others:

That's exactly what to do. I'm aware that due to circumstances, you guys have been left to learn about the Unification section yourselves, so I'll keep that in mind. 

The essay is essentially asking you to discuss all the factors involved in Germany's unification. So get that sorted out first. Look back over the work done on the textbook chapter, remembering to read the stuff I put into your question booklet; then look at the old essay plan I put on the website and the marking scheme of the 2010 essay from the SQA. Start to write up on each factor - what part it played, how important it was and maybe get a quote. Once that has been done, then think about which factor(s) seemed to play the biggest part in bring all the states together into an unified Germany. Now go back to the 2010 essay and re-arrange the order of your factors so you are tackling the 'isolated factor' first, make a judgement on it then discuss the other factors. 

The introduction should have a bit of background which will be about how there was a growth of national feeling and some steps towards bringing all the states together through the Zolverein but it arguably it was the actions of Bismarck and his three wars, financed by a strong economic Prussia that helped bring (or force) German states together. 

Your conclusion should sum up all the factors into a balanced judgement which answers the question.

Just give it your best shot and let's get through this disruptive spell as best we can.

S4 History Help for the prelims

Hi! Sorry I missed you last week and now the snow is preventing us from meeting up. What I can do here is to remind you of a few things I went over just before the prelims started.

1. You should have your Immigrants and Exiles and Wallace and Bruce stuff all at home ready to revise. That includes the revision booklets and Study Skills booklet. Lost it? Don't fear, somewhere in this site you'll find electronic copies (click on S3 or S4 on the right and go through the pages till you find them.)
2. Your prelim will cover everything we did on Immigrants and Exiles and Wallace and Bruce. Int 2 pupils will do ONE essay (you have a choice of two) and 6 questions. You will find all the types of questions you have practiced in class, namely, 'How Useful', Compare, 5 mark source and a 5 mark KU only with no source. Int 1 pupils have to do 8 questions which are made up using 'How Useful questions' and 3 and 4 mark source questions.
3. Revise actively! Draw, make summary diagrams, storyboards, puzzles and make up quizzes with the answers.
4. Do as many past papers as possible. When you discover a question you're not sure about, then revise that section again. Don't forget to check the SQA website for marking schemes of past papers. 
5. Use websites to help - try clicking on 'My Del.icio.us' on the right to get going. BBC have some good stuff. Neil Oliver's 'Scotland's History' is good for Wallace and Bruce. Don't forget about all the resources on here!
6. Int2 pupils - you should practice essay introductions and make essay plans. Also, do an essay fully in 18-20 minutes just to make sure you can!
7. Help each other. Get in contact through the various social networks that you use. Pass on or remind pupils about this site's address.
8. Most importantly of all, don't let this weather hiccup break your revision discipline. Stay focused.

Work to do for Higher pupils this week.

Hi! Sorry I missed you last week and now the snow is causing a bit of havoc. So, to keep you on track I strongly suggest you complete the following:

By now you should have completed or be close to completing the chapter on Bismarck and the unification of Germany. The booklet of questions you have includes much extra text and advice on the essay dealing with this section. I hope you enjoyed it and now see what I meant about 'a story' with characters and events. This makes for a good essay subject. 

Next Monday (6th December), you will complete this essay title under exam conditions:

How far was Bismarck’s success in unifying Germany between 1862 and 1871 due mainly to mistakes made by others?

Good news is, this was the 2010 essay and there is a comprehensive marking scheme to help you here.

I'm now going to try to find other material that might help you with this essay but as I'm stuck at home, I may not have that much. Keep popping back to check. 

Tomorrow I will put the next chapter questions on here, so come back then so you can crack on with the next section.
